Barriers and Solutions to Reporting Gender Based Violence: The Experience of Survivors

Research FLyer.png

Survivors of gender based violence often experience negative reporting experiences with police that can contribute to revictimization and negatively impact their wellbeing. While there is amply research concerning negative experiences in reporting gender based violence to criminal justice authorities, as well as how the criminal justice process may be re-traumatizing for survivors, we know comparatively little about community alternatives that could be mobilized to support survivors. In other words, there is a gap in the literature with respect to how formal and informal community based resources can mitigate barriers to reporting and work towards breaking the cycle of violence for individuals who have experienced gender based violence.

The goals of the study are to:

  • Understand formal and informal community resources that can mitigate barriers to reporting gender based violence and mitigate the cycle of violence

  • Explore how these experiences or resources are unique to survivors who encounter multiple forms of oppression

  • Identify recommendations to develop survivor-centric, community-based responses to support survivors of gender based violence

The following research questions will be addressed:

1) What formal and informal community resources can mitigate barriers to reporting gender-based violence and mitigate the cycle of violence?

2) How might these experiences be unique to survivors who encounter multiple forms of oppression?

3) What recommendations can be identified to develop survivor-centric, community-based responses to support survivors of gender-based violence?

This study has been reviewed by the Research Ethics Board for Compliance with federal guidelines for research involving human participants (REB #23-06-012).
